My mom and I took a trip to Galveston and took some videos of what was left of our favorite places.

  • This just breaks my heart. We live on the mainland and spent every other weekend camping at this once beautiful park. We miss it so much. Last weekend, we rode down to see the park's cleanup progress. All of the destruction you see in the video has been removed and sand brought in and graded. We were told that the camping part of the park will be restored and located farther back, closer to the entrance. It might take several years, but we are hoping for sooner.

  • We went down there last weekend and they have a ranger station and some new picnic tables on the gulf side now. I'm very happy to see all the recovery at the park and to Galveston!

  • OMG. This looks like a seen out of War of the Worlds, or Planet of the Apes. The protective dunes are totally gone. Thanks for positing it.

  • Your welcome. Just found out that part of the park will reopen March 21, 2009.

  • This video answered my questions about Ike's impact on Galveston Island State Park, where over the years I've camped and park-hosted. The concrete slabs with a hole are what's left of the campsite/picnic shelters. There were well over 100 of those structures originally. Your video is shocking and saddening to me. Thank for posting it.

  • Your welcome. When we pulled into the park my heart broke. My family and I camped out all the time at GISP, and hope to do so again.

  • Sad. This park is one of the few fond memories of my unhappy childhood..

  • Wow. Thanks for posting. What were those concrete things with the big circle on the sides?
