The Republic of China (ROC, commonly known as Taiwan) celebrated its 100 years anniversary of the founding of the nation. The Republic of China was founded in 1911 following a successful Chinese revolution led by Sun Yat Sen, which overthrew the Qing Empire. Following a loss to the Chinese communist in the Chinese civil war from 1945-1949, the Republic of China government relocated to the island of Taiwan in 1949, whereby the Chinese communist founded the People's Republic (PRC) on the mainland.

The current free territory of Republic of China includes the island of Taiwan, Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu, whereas mainland China was regarded as a fallen territory. The ROC constitution still includes the entire territory of mainland China despite the region being occupied by the Chinese communist.

The ROC was a founding security council member of United Nation in 1945 and a major participant in the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It held the legitimate seat to China in the United Nation from 1945-1972 before being ousted by the Chinese communist (PRC). Despite the political setback, the Republic of China focused on its economic development and became an important economic force in the world. In 1987, following the lifting of martial law, a democratization process further transformed the Republic of China into a free liberal democracy. The ROC constitution does not recognize the sovereignty or legitimacy of PRC.
Although commonly known as Taiwan or Chinese Taipei, and faced with international political issues cross-straits and the possible threat of Dejure Taiwan Independence, the legacy of ROC continued in Taiwan.

Currently, the Republic of China is the leading democratic nation in the Chinese-speaking world. Its legacy, cultural influence, social progressive dynamism, technology and foothold is drastically felt in the Chinese-speaking world, not just in mainland China, but also in the overseas Chinese community.

Sun Yat Sen, a visionary architect whose dream is to build a strong prosperous China, based on the Republican democratic ideal, particularly the 3 People's principles (Nationalism, Livelihood, Democracy), continued to realized on the island of Taiwan today.

To thank many overseas Chinese for their contribution in worldwide support for the Chinese revolution of 1911 led by Sun Yat Sen, his legacy was to be told and remembered by not just every Chinese but also by many non-Chinese. It is hoped that his Republican and Democratic ideal can also be propagated in mainland China in the hope of building a strong prosperous and democratic China.
