Such a stupid trailer for such a good movie.

I mentioned this in another comment, but I wanted to clarify. I simply said "if you go by imdb's stars" meaning you could do it. While I don't think imdb is the best source, as the internet has trolls and people who don't understand cinema, it can still be used. I mean it shows the popularity and there are people who do understand films worthiness (personally I think its hard to say that, it's like art (Michael Bay is still terrible)). For instance The Godfather is #2 and Schindler's List is #8.

I thought, in the case of SPR it was about honoring war veterans, while still exposing the horror and brutality of war. It is known to be very realistic, one of the most realistic war depictions in films, at least in recent memory. So to me, reality in films is hard to come by, and should be looked up to. Still, I see what you mean by unsubtle and it does have cliches. I should watch SiL to be sure, but the trailer sure doesn't give it justice if it's as good as you say.

Well thanks for the extra detail about the Shakespearean nature of the film, and I also appreciate your opinions on the other movies. My only point with the IMDb stars was the popularity level. By critical acclaim, AFI's 100 American movies includes Saving Private Ryan, but not Shakespeare in Love. Back to other movies, Life is Beautiful is fantastic, and has a comedy in tragedy, maintaining a sense of innocence, which is more rare than the genuine comedy you mentioned, in my opinion.

For someone who claims to be a cinephile, I'm disappointed to hear that you believe IMDB stars to be a good indicator of a film's worthiness.

LiB was wonderful to watch. The humour was heartwarming (not sardonic, or black in spite of the subject manner) and all that overthetop comedic antics only served to make the emotions more heartfelt. All three films dwelt on the theme of war - SPR was heavy-handed and TTRL philosophical, but LiB was human in its subtlety, micro focus and heartfelt. So SiL vs LiB - does tragedy trump comedy, just because of its heavyweight material? SiL for me deserved to win, genuine comedy is hard to come by.

I've watched Life is Beautiful, The Thin Red Line and Saving Private Ryan. SPR was easily the most Hollywood of the movies nominated that year. Whilst I appreciate Tom Hanks' acting, the film's themes were delivered in an unsubtle, graceless, clunky manner. TTRL had beautiful cinematography and more thoughtful opinions on war than SPR's cliches, but the movie gets bogged down as all Malick films tend to do (ex-Badlands).

There was nothing Hollywood about it imo, and I'm a film geek. The script was written by Stoppard, the comedic spirit of the story mirrored many Shakespearean plots, without being too irreverent or cheesy. Most of the lines were delivered in iambic pentameter without sounding artificial or dated (NOT easy to do) and its comedic timing was perfect. For me, this movie captured the Shakespearean comedic spirit perfectly with lightheartedness and wit.

Ben Affleck though, was woefully miscast.

Also, if you go by imdb's stars, it is the lowest rated out of all the other movie's nominated for Best Picture that year.
