The story may not be 100% accurate,
nonetheless it is true.
A native American friend used to say the above to me when I got picky about something.
The verse below is full of power:
"Shall I be wafted to the skies on flow'ry beds of ease
While others strive to win the prize
And sail on bloody seas..." Why should I think I'm going to have it easy ?

I just looked up John Newton and read that he actually was the CAPTAIN of a slave ship.
nevertheless Arlo tells a great story and of all the people that have ever recorded that song his is my personal favorite partly because of the story he tells.

It's a good story, but it's not a true story.
Newton worked in the slave trade until he had to retire for health reasons - almost a decade after he "found god".
He never turned a slave ship around. Even if he wanted to, he couldn't. He was never the one in command. He was only the first mate
