  • It's a good story, but it's not a true story.

Newton worked in the slave trade until he had to retire for health reasons - almost a decade after he "found god".

He never turned a slave ship around. Even if he wanted to, he couldn't. He was never the one in command. He was only the first mate

  • can anyone put Steve Goodman on Y.T. Please.

I can find 3 or 4 videos, 'Would love to hear more...

  • The story may not be 100% accurate,

    nonetheless it is true.

A native American friend used to say the above to me when I got picky about something.

The verse below is full of power:

"Shall I be wafted to the skies on flow'ry beds of ease

While others strive to win the prize

And sail on bloody seas..." Why should I think I'm going to have it easy ?

  • Thanks for posting this and all the videos you have posted Jackie!

  • I just looked up John Newton and read that he actually was the CAPTAIN of a slave ship.

nevertheless Arlo tells a great story and of all the people that have ever recorded that song his is my personal favorite partly because of the story he tells.

    Thanks Arlo

  • Best video ever! Thanks do much for posting it!
