The only part of the space genre a company couldn't copy is game-play.
So expect, all mmo's in the space genre to be remarkably similar. Like I feel all FPS's are all basically the same. But the ones that always stand out are the first to capture the audience on game-play - make it good, people will play it; make it bad and you'll be ripped apart by the gaming community.
Jump on the band wagon by all means, it makes for variety - which is always good.

I would think it would be very difficult to come up with something completely new in the space genre of mmo, and I'm pretty sure EVE took a lot of influence from sci - fi movies and other games. They certainly took from the real world for detail - Veldspar is real, and so are most of the components found in the game play - implants can be done, has been done to replace memory in brain damaged people - cloning is of course easily done - only illegal in real life to practice on humans.

Maybe not so much lazy, but more like calm and solitary...like space itself. Which seems to fit :). Very cool looking game! I'd love to see it when it's done!
