An honorable performance at a tempo which is close to what one would expect.
A tour de force can be heard by the young French/Irish baritone Edwin Crossley-Mercer on "Supercookiebox" singing his first major rolein Aix at a tempo which is enough to make most singers lose their diction. Hats off to the young man, whom we shall see and hear again and again!
I had performed this before with the cut in the aria. I believe this was the 1st performance I did without the cut. It was 100 degrees in a little theater in Madrid with no prompter. Live opera! Thats what makes it so exciting. Does anyone remember Kiri Te Kanawa's Dove sono at the met centenial? For all the critics out there, lets see you do it! Sincerely, Randal Turner
He's got a great voice, but I really hope this is a rehearsal tape - he obviously didn't know the aria that well at the time, or at least not the words. It's odd that hedid so much better with Rivolgete, which is longer and harder with more melodies.
