  • Do you still have the Cherokee RHD?

  • Yeah, and I still have the restored postal jeep.

  • Are you planning to have this restored or fixed up?

  • I sold it a while back

  • My 1976 CJ-5 came with a P.O.S AMC 20 rear end. I went through 6 axles in the AMC 20 before the axle housing broke loose from the differential housing. I bought a DJ like yours but with no engine and used the Dana 44 rear end that came in it. I put a Detroit Locker and 4.27 gears in the Dana 44 and put it in my CJ-5.

  • I've never had a problem with any AMC 20's I've had. The two piece version of the 20 used in the 1/4 ton Jeeps were weak when combined with lots of power and large tires, but thats only if someone drives like a fool. The full size AMC 20's are great, theyre one piece axels, that are even better than the Dana 44 due to a larger ring gear.

  • Sweet! I've always loved vintage postal jeeps. I've never owned one, nor have I driven one, but I love to see one in restored or well kept up condition and (hopefully) still being used. I've seen so many of them scrapped in favour of newer, more modern (and in my opinion) ugly looking vehicles. The only exceptions I've seen are the Jeep Cherokee postal Jeep and the Subaru Legacy postal.

  • I have a 1973 DJ5C and it's still running like a champ. I live in Hawaii, and being so close to the ocean I have very little rust. Want to see a pic. Go to Myk Lum on facebook

  • I absolutely enjoyed your commentary! I'm guessing you're from southeastern North Carolina. I'm from Wilmington.

  • dude my jeep DJ5m the previous owners painted mine with house paint its such a pain in the ass to remove with stripper.

  • You are right. Napa sucks.

  • Oh Yea. Driving like a fool would explain it.

Even with the hub installed at the recommend torque, that tiny woodruff key would snap and the axle would spin in the hub, the key would tear it up like it was on a metal lathe.

My CJ-5 had a rebuilt 232 strait 6 with old Maxi Trac, 12 x 32x 15 tires turned by 3,54 gears. Not a great gear ratio.
