Back in 1983, I moved to a town with a deplorable lack of skateable concrete. It forced me to get creative with my athletic expression. I put inline skate wheels on a standard skateboard, added bindings to the top and the dirt board was born.

Not long after, I invented the sport of gravelyaking, immortalized in this classic documentary: http://www.vimeo.com/2956776 (2 long 4 utube)

  • This vid was shot sometime in the latter part of the decade - guessing around 1987. According to wikipedia, inline skates were patented in 1953, and they started to get popular in the 1980s.

  • I was experiments with stuff I had, and found the inline wheels worked well because they would track straight when I applied pressure, but they'd give a good controlled slide to the side when I unweighted. It ended up feeling like riding a snowboard.
