It would not be the best save of all time, but what a time to make such a save.
This was 1970, blazing heat, with a kick off at noon.
This was a huge game in that World Cup.

GG3695 I would plus that Pele's header, first hit the ground and then went towards the post and that makes the save much harder coz it changed direction.

It's too bad the camera man did a bad job with this one, the spectacularness of the save is lost I think because you cannot tell how Banks is positioned until after he has already reacted to the header. The camera man is so focused on Pele, he doesn't give Banks any chance of making that save, he only shifts angle to the goalkeeper in order to show the ball going in. One of the great moments in football history sort of lost there, too sad.

Ref to not greatest save! Any one who has been a goal keeper will understand why this save by Gordon Banks is rated by many as the greatest save of all time, it is not just the fact the shot came from Pele at his best and Brazil, and the stage was the World Cup, it is the complex almost unreal change in body motion that Banks some how made to be able to make the save, the double save by Montomery in the 1973 cup final allthough superb is not of the same level.
