How Birds Once Flew

Here sits a monster
long suspected of the sea.

The sailor's nightmare has a face--
a dodo's abject misery.

Inky beast,
half-bird, half-effigy,
its beak lies caked and open
to the crudest gravity.

But protest doesn't come.

One wonders, can its bird-brain
even settle on the crime
of cheated altitude?

For now, fresh-distanced from the sun,
it shoulders fallen sky
--a tarry-eyed monstrosity.

Improbable, this being
once held up
the miracle of flight.
