Gaboon Viper (Bitis gabonica)

* Size: 4 - 6 feet.

* Weight: 15 - 18 pounds,

* Average life span in the wild: Estimated up to 18 years,

* Scientific Name: Bitis gabonica,

* Adult Size: Commonly attains 3½ to 4½ feet in length; occasionally may attain 6 feet. This snake has a proportionately immense girth.

* Range: Most abundant in central and east Africa but of spotty distribution as far south as Zimbabwe and Zululand.

* Habitat: Montane forests, coastal forests and scrubby coastal dunes. Gaboon Viper is a venomous viper species found in the rainforests and savannas of Sub-Saharan Africa.This is not only the largest member of the genus Bitis, but also the world's heaviest viper id and it has the longest fangs and the highest venom yield of any venomous snake.Two subspecies are currently recognized, including the nominate race described here.
