Sarajevo, YUGOSLAVIA - 1984 Winter Games, Figure Skating, Men's Long Program - Scott Hamilton of the United States didn't have the skate of his life as he had hoped, but it was enough to help him remain in 1st Place and win the Gold Medal.

  • He skated to a weird hodge podge of music. No rhyme or reason to it!

  • @TheSienna29 The 70s and early 80s was the time where skaters would recycle 1 or more sections of music for the next season's programs as opposed to choosing all new music. The 3rd and last sections were carried over from his 1983 Long Program. Remember, prior to the 1981 season, Men's & Pairs' Long Programs were 5 minutes long, not 4 mins 30 secs. With so much training and focus on the compulsory figures, there was as much then like these days to focus so much on developing new choreography.

  • @3Axel1996 This has got to be the ugliest winning long program in Olympic history. Awful music poorly skated. Scott Hamilton should UPS his gold medal to Brian Orser.

  • @Kiltdon No, I think that distinction should go to Beatrix Schuba of Austria in 1972. She only won Gold because the figures were worth 60%, while the Free Skate was worth only 40%...

  • winning a gold medal is much more harder nowadays!

  • @smellab1000 When it comes to the free skating. Remember, this was the time of Compulsory Figures, and it takes a lot of training to master tracing intricate patterns on the ice and repeating the pattern time 3-times before that figure is judged.

  • everything about that was the '80s (the music, the outfit, the hair, the decor, Scott's speech...hahahaha "the good 'ol boy gosh darnit!") ! if he had been skating in today's competitions, he would have been trashed for not hitting all of the planned jumps and the lack of artistry. it's amazing how things have changed. "you didn't make a mistake, you just didn't do one or two things"...you'd NEVER hear that today from a commentator!

  • What's the music?

  • @bemar1972 - Insane scoring indeed. 5.9 for artisitc, maybe but not for technical. How do you win the Olympics doing mostly doubles??!!! In 1970, that would've been ok. Poor Orser.

  • Love him as a skater and as a commentator...

  • @firmingitup Here at 1984 Olympics in free skating

    Orser 3L, 3A!!!, 3F, 3T+2T, 3T 5 triples, 4 different

    Sabovcik 3L, 3A!!!, 3Loop, 3T+2T, 3S 5 triples, 5 different

    Cerne 3T, 3F, 3S 3 triples, 3 different

    Boitano 3L, 3T, 3A-twofooted, 3F+2T, 3Loop, 3T, 3S 5 triples, 4 different

    Fadeev 3L, 3A-2footed, 4T (!!!) -2footed, 3Loop, 3T, 3S 1 quad, 4 triples, 4 different

    ecc. ecc.

  • hes good iam a few years later though!

  • I still love and remember his performances, he always made the public smile somehow. I am delighted to say I am one of his never ending fans! =)

  • Just plain fun to watch Scott, even in these years before he was able to really become the performer that he is known so well or now; "Walk This Way" has to be one of my all time favorite pro-routines :)

  • A fully popped triple and gets a 5.9!! The sport seems much more fair now-a-days
