Hundreds of women, and men stood silently on Queen St. Wednesday, November 22, 2006 to remember the 305 women and children that lost their lives at the hands of their partners over the last ten years. And that number keeps rising.
The Womyn for Social Justice have been holding the silent vigil every Wednesday in November to protest the light sentences that abusers are handed by the court system. Today's protest held special significance as the participants held t-shirts describing the murders of those women and children.
Spokesperson Bonnie Baranski says the protest have worked to increase awareness but she hopes the results go beyond that, "I hope that society understands that this problem has a lot to do with the systemic problems in society like poverty, lack of child care and lack of affordable services for women once they've left their partners. I believe that men are not receiving the sentences that would deter them from this crime."
