We trekked to a local nature reserve to meet up with a biology research team, including Professor Ron Mumme, Danny Jacobs '12, and Mike Vlah '13. They are studying the effects of plumage pattern on the foraging behavior of the Hooded Warbler, a bird species native to northwest Pennsylvania, in addition to earlier research done by Rebekah Petroff '14. While dodging mosquitos and deer flies, we asked Mike and Danny about their opportunity to work on research with a tenured professor, how Allegheny is opening doors to their futures, and how great it is to step outside and see how the outdoors is a biology lab, too.
