I saw one just a couple of days ago, just like this one, in a s mall town in Germany, just on the borders of Switzerland. It was collecting nectar from an azalea. My husband and I marveled at it because we had never seen one before and when I got home, I just had to find out what it was. It is a hummingbird hawk moth.
this is incredible ...been trying to identify this creature for close to 20 years! This visited our garden in Branford, Connecticut of all places.

These things clearly like petunias. I saw one yesterday for the first time ever, and it was happily roaming among my mother's petunias.
I am near Vancouver, Canada. Where have the rest of you seen these crazy big bugs?

@Iconoclast444 The tomato hornworm is the larval stage of the Hawk Moth, NOT the HUMMINGBIRD Hawk Moth or Hummingbird Moth.
