@mirro379 Exactly!

@altohaus They don't understand that live performance is more about spirit than perfection.

"Air escaping" - "A tiny bit out of tune" - blah blah blah. Get over yourselves folks. When "mikabrains" shared this on YouTube 2 years ago, it was to be enjoyed for what it was. If you're still at the phase when you're asking for a refund after a concert because the soloist played a wrong note, then you shouldn't be commenting in public on a performance like this. Maybe the air you heard escaping was the wind twirling inside your empty head.

Supreme ... unbelievable ... state-of-the-art ... 2 masters of the music ... watch it to the end ...

To have Goodman perform this incredibly difficult concerto at the age he is in this video, along with the fact that Goodman was a jazzer at heart, no one should be complaining about "air-escaping from the side of his lips" or whatever. Go perform with the CSO, NYO, or BP then come back and talk.

Mrstjim1, I watched this video probably 10 times and didn't hear air escaping from the sides of his mouth. On the solo, you can hear how he inhales but he was getting tired. It's completely understandable. He is not a classical musician and not young. You try to play like this at his age. I think Mr Goodman did a fantastic job. Maybe technically not perfect but he conveyed the emotion of the piece and made the audience appreciate it.

@mstrjim1 Fine and dandy. then, you're just arguing taste - also fine and dandy, but that does not 'certify' your taste, nor alter the fact that Copland wrote not only for Goodman, but 'for the people' and maybe he was / would be happier with this idiosynchratic performer than a homogenously 'smooth' slick professional one as delivered by a DMA conservatory trained pro. If you play the clarinet 'straight' in Prokovief's overture on hebrew themes, you've missed the musical point.
-
@MuseDuCafe I got my DMA in Music performance for clarinet not that it matters but I know the history of the piece and his background
-
@tangomecrazy he has for jazz.........
Interesting fact is that the highest note in the piece was actually written higher originally. When Copland showed Goodman the music he told Copland "I don't think I can play that high." Copland responded with "Why not? I've heard you play higher than that in recording of your jazz." Goodman said "Yeah, but in jazz when I play that high I actually am not trying to play a particular note." So if you go look at the original parts there are erase marks where Copland had to change the note.

Benny Goodman is to the clarinet as Horowitz is to the piano, so I am quite sure that Benny's interpretation was exactly as he meant it to be. After all, it was Aaron Copeland who wrote this piece for Mr. Goodman to perform. And as good as he was on the clarinet it took him nearly 3 years to perfect his interpretation before he would play it on stage. Ironically enough it was the "swing" sections of this piece which Copeland worked with Benny to come out to perfection. Together they are magic.
