World War II
Dieppe was a pathetic failure. Sixty years later, it seems obvious that Jubilee was a bizarre operation with no chance of success whatsoever and likely to result in a huge number of casualties. In August 1942, British and Allied officers did not have yet the knowledge and combat experience to make a proper assessment of the risks of such an operation. This catastrophe was useful precisely in providing that knowledge which was later to make victory possible.
The Dieppe fiasco demonstrated that it was imperative to improve communications at all levels: on the battlefield, between the HQs of each unit, between air, naval and ground forces. The idea of capturing a well-defended seaport to use as a bridgehead was dropped after August 19th, 1942. In addition, the raid on Dieppe showed how important it was to use prior air bombings to destroy enemy defenses as much as possible, to support assault troops with artillery fire from ships and landing crafts, to improve techniques and equipment to remove obstacles to men and tanks.
The true meaning of the sacrifices made, by the mainly Canadian 2nd Infantry Division at Dieppe, was made obvious two years after this ill-fated date, when on D-Day the Allies gained a foothold in Europe to free the continent from Nazi aggression.

  • A special mention to the Fusiliers du Mont-Royal that also participated on the Dieppe raid....

  • Great Video but failed to show incompetance of the head who had previously lost a destroyer by failing to even zigzag where there were known submarines. Secrecy was compromised. Beach conditions were not requested. The secret service were not informed and were actually trying to confuse the enemy by informing them of a Dieppe raid. The latest tanks were sent onto a beach where they could not operate etc. Have not time to go further but the planning was a disgrace.

  • Great documentary.

Given the fact that this operation was a failure regardless of the valuable experience gained by American, British and Canadian forces; how viable would have been a landing on the French Mediterranean coast at the same time frame when Southern France was still under Vichy French control and not under directly German control?

It certainly would have triggered war with Vichy France but at the end of the day the Allies, not the Germans were fighting for France's liberation.

  • There is still a decaying 'Mulberry Harbour' in Langstone Harbour off of Hayling Island, England. I was lucky enough to visit it in my holiday to England in 2008. Also where I live in Rockingham, Western Australia still has a WW2 radar emplacement and I visit it every time I go for my run around the city. WW2 was a fascinating period in history.

  • My Dad was taken prisoner. Thanks for the documentary

  • My Dad was taken prisoner. Thanks for the documentory.

  • Bit of an error here. 3rd Canadian Infantry Division landed on D-Day. 2nd Canadian Infantry Division did not enter the Normandy campaign until the following month.

  • thanks for sharing, very interesting
