The Korg Wavestation is a great synthesizer for fantastic digital pad sounds. It came out 1990 and was actually developed by people from Sequential Circuits for Korg. The Wavestation reminds me of the M1 (similar hardware and similar basic sound), I think the Wavestation is also perfect for people who love the M1 as a synth. The Wavestation delivers similar synth sounds - but in better quality. It also has the same filter without resonance. Despite of this, it can sound amazing.

It's definitely not a "Music Workstation".

Like on the Roland D-50, the Vector stick is very useful to vary the sounds a little bit. That's important, because editing sounds on the WS is not easy. All in all, a fantastic inspiring instrument. If I must choose between WS and D-50, I would vote for the WS.

Many people played the Wavestation: Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, Michael Cretu (Enigma), Peter Oxendale, Jan Hammer, Tony Banks (Genesis)...

In the video I show you some of my favourite sounds. Enjoy!

I played the Wavestation without any additional effects or eq. All you hear is coming straight out of the Korg WS.

  • Nice vid, but can you tell me which sounds are used? I have one too.

  • @3100nfs sounds from the ROM bank, and sounds from Cards. I don't remember from which cards the sounds are, I have many.

  • I was curious as to whether or not you are using an EX or the original WS-1? Also, are you using any other PCM's or rom cards? or are just using factory PCM's? Thanks!

  • @goldenroland Hi, I used some ROM Cards and some presets. It sounds funny, but I don't know exactly if it's a EX. It has the EX logo on it, but it has the same amount of waveforms like the old Wavestation. On the other side, it has the newer effects. It also has a low serial number. It's a mistery to me.

  • I have en X5D and the sound is very close to the wavestation but wavestation have only AI1 Synthesis and the X5D AI2 what is the difference ?

  • @nanotrax The Wavestation has the "vector synthesis" with "wave sequencing", not the AI sound generation like a workstation from Korg. Indeed, some sounds of the X5D sound similar because it has Wavestation samples.

  • All hail the great Korg Wavestation.........king of the romplers!!!!!

  • @mrjjdim Probably the best invested 50 bucks ever :)

I've had the original Wavestation for about 15 years and just recently bought the Korg legacy version, so the old lady doesn't have to do the heavy touring.

I must admit that I can't tell them apart soundwise, even with my own sounds loaded into the virtual machine.

One of the greatest Dave Smith / Sequential Circuits synths of all time trapped in a Korg body :)

Give it love and it will love you right back ;)

  • I don't know what to think about these vector snyths, they are very good sounding, it's almost like having a drum pad...a little, in the sense that their function is to do a specific task. I like it though, I'm curious to hear someone's music directly from these types of snyths and where they take them. I have mixed feelings, would love to play with one though. What's that sound you're doing at 6:28 - 6:32 , sounds almost like arpeggio or cross panning. The usage of sounds could be versatile.

  • The LCD Screen's died on mine! Think there are some dubious DIY fixes tho...

  • I could make a complete soundtrack from a Wavestation!

  • great video , great synth

  • How many presets???? What's the difference between the wavestation and the wavestation EX?

  • Very cool Synthesizer you've got from the 90s!

I can get a Synthesizer with my friends band and People will see me Playing the Synthesizer! :)
