A quick screen capture video showing you how to draw a very simple sports logo using a few simple techniques. This particular style of logo is a near symmetrical illustration of a gorilla face in an oval bed. The team are 'The Gorillas'.

Fraser Davidson is a professional designer and animator. For more examples of his work, please visit www.cargocollective.com/davidson and www.fraserdavidson.co.uk

  • You Rasterise the Type to Bend it? Seems very un-Vector to do that? I wish AI allowed you to do it to the vector type like the ole KPT power tools allowed you to do.

Just watching you do the process, redrawing it over and over helps. I never do that, but I will now!

    Great stuff! Thanks for posting.

  • @DirtybBytes No type is rasterised. You outline the font first although even this isnt necessary.

  • kindly tell me which software you use to post process your logo? is it AE in which you add the lights texture and 3Dimentionality?

  • @nirmans After Effects, Optical Flares, Magic Bullet Looks.

  • Great video, great art work and wonderful music and editing. but no communication and no teaching. The Key points as to why any one would want to see this video and learn from its extremely talented Creator are missing. I ask that you teach this wonderful form you use sir. it would be of an amazing benefit to those who want to learn this craft

  • @jarmelo2006 Its impossible to teach the editorial process involved in what marks to make, where to highlight, where to shadow. It differs for each logo. I realise this makes the title of the video a little disingenuous, but it sounded better than 'watch me make sports logos'. I was asked to show people my process and the types of broad techniques I use.

  • Fraser, watching how you work with Illustrator is fascinating. Specifically, I like how you iterate and refine by copying, fading back, locking and then drawing on top in successive steps. That's a great tip. Are you starting with a large artboard so you can keep adding versions? If so, what size?

Most interesting to me is watching you create the forms and seeing you bring to life the faces and expressions. I would like to hear more about that process. Do you start with a visual in mind? Thanks

  • hey is there anyway i can get a logo from you?

  • Would love to see a how too with voice over. Your work inspires, I would love to learn your techniques! Ever think about it?

  • @jermolx Choose "Arc Lower" instead of the regular "Arc", then set the bend to a negative number (ex. -15). This will keep the top flat and arc the bottom up. Usually you have to stretch the type vertically a bit afterwards to compensate for the squish.
