  • kerryhr: What? Mary Travers immortalized this song. Jonny Cash does a version as good a Roberta. No one can come close to Mary - she is the best; she sings like a godess, the rest are mere mortals.

  • Wow, I can not stop watching Mary sing this song. She exudes such warmth, calmness and womanly sexuality. It's driving me nuts. For me she has left a high standard for female vocalists to which they can aspire.

  • This is by far the best version of this song I've ever heard. So beautiful. Thank you, Mary. RIP.

  • wow - this live recording is superior to her recorded version. Mary is top notch.

  • Time will not erase the memory of this beautiful voice, this wonderful performer, yet time will age her songs like a much sought after wine. For some reason the other day, I glanced upon an Arizona sunset that was truly magnificent and my mind played one of her songs.

  • First time ever I heard this version and wow....absolutely beautiful !!

  • @WildeNotesMusic That's my understanding of it, too...!

Ewan (born Jimmy Miller) was from Salford UK, born of Scottish parents - and I drive past the gas works croft mentioned in the first line of Dirty Old Town practically every day... it's by the M602/Regent Road roundabout!

    ;o)

  • @Owdfolkie I've been told (by those in the know) that McColl actually wrote this song for Peggy Seeger to SING, as opposed to writing it as a love song to sing TO her. (I got this info at a recent small-venue Peggy Seeger concert.)

  • I actually like this song better the way Ewan McColl originally wrote it than the way Roberta Flack, Mary Travers & pretty much everyone else rearranged the melody and phrasing of the first line of the song. Maybe it's just because that's the way I first heard and learned the song, but I think the melody is prettier that way.

  • Gravel? What gravel?
