  • Rhododendron is that nondescript shrub. Grew wild under dense forest canopy some with giant magnolia like flowers. Doesn't make a mess and takes care of itself. Prune it back hard to make it look like a tree use it as a trellis. It really belongs in your wilderness zone. I bet it will endure heavy mulching for a no-dig veggie patch like squash or beans. I confess mine has useless periwinkle ground cover under it.
