Running Ubuntu Linux, sometimes I still need to get into Windows to run a certain application. Having to reboot just to run something in Windows is a pain. So I set up VirtualBox to run Windows 7 within Ubuntu. Using dual monitors, I have my main Ubuntu screen running on the left monitor, and Windows 7 (running within Ubuntu) on the right monitor when I need it.

  • hi ! I've a question : I have a problem with ubuntu and the detection of my two screens with a radeon hd6870, apparently the same that you have. So are your two screens connected on the DVI ports ? Do you use any adapter ? Or are you using the HDMI for your second screen ? I'm kinda stuck with this so any help would be appreciated :) thx !

  • @monsieurpointmort hi! When I made this video, I did so using a video card with a VGA output and a DVI output, so had a monitor hooked to each. It was a Nvidia Geforce 9500 GT I think. But yeah, I have a HD 6870 now. But I don't have a 2nd monitor at the moment (and haven't since I got this card). So I can't comment on running the 2 DVI's on it in Ubuntu. But I do have the HDMI hooked to my TV, and that works fine. So not sure why your DVI's aren't. Wish I could help more. Miss my dual monitors!

  • how did you get running the dual monitors? and what video card do you use?

    thanks

  • @to6o83 I had a video card with a VGA output and a DVI output, so had a monitor hooked to each. It was a Nvidia Geforce 9500 GT I think. Don't have it anymore though. Right now I have a Radeon HD 6870, which has two DVI ports, and HDMI port, etc. so I run multi monitors through that now. :)

  • @animasoucoyant I'm just too curious, if you were to play a game in VirtualBox running Windows 7 would there be any game throttling (losing performance) compared to direct Hard Drive boot? If we give the enough HDD and RAM capacity

  • @AiDz0r I've actually done this, seen at /watch?v=apSN4ziOSMI

Although I didn't show any gameplay there, just the lobby room. But it did run fine when I was in game. I was running it in Wine in Linux, instead of using VirtualBox. But if you have enough RAM for both OS's and the game, it should do fine. That's my main problem when gaming this way. I only have 3GB RAM, so it goes quick with 2 OS's and then gaming on top of it. But it still runs okay. More ram = better though

  • @animasoucoyant

Nice, i planing om ruing in virtual box. Just got new memory, now uses 6GB, shod be sufficient. Got a new 6870 board and a intel SSD so it should run smoothly. Give me the weekend to install it.
