The U.S. state of North Carolina is on high alert as coastal regions await the arrival of hurricane Earl. Shelters are open in the area, and evacuations have been ordered from towns in the state's Outer Banks. While the hurricane has decreased in speed, forecasters warn that North Carolina may be Earl's most destructive stop along the eastern shores of the continent.
