The third movement, in 3/8 time, is titled "Scherzo" but is actually in rondo form. The ascending, hesitant, three-note motif sounds very similar to the first movement, but this theme undergoes many changes, until the end, where it ends quietly, on the very lowest notes of the piano of Beethoven's time.
