New amateur footage shows the moment the tsunami hit the port town of Kamaishi in Iwate on Friday.

Residents watched in horror from on high as the wave swept through streets taking cars and buildings.

Other people were stranded on the roof of a multi-storey building as the waters rose rapidly below.

Thousands of poeple are missing in the Iwate prefecture in the north east of Japan
