The first part of Romans 14 tells me to leave you alone in your convictions. The convictions I have, I am supposed to live out, and you are to be fully convinced in your own mind and live the convictions you have. The second part of the chapter deals with how I am to approach my freedom if it harms you and Paul gives us three reasons we would limit our liberty.

1. Not to put a stumbling block in our brothers way. (Rom 14:13-15)

2. Our first priority is to live for the kingdom of God (Rom 14:16-18)

3. We should be putting the edification of others above our will (Rom 14:19-22)

There may very well be something I am free to do, but if it is going to hurt you I will choose to give up my freedom for your sake. We are not making decisions based on what is best for me, but what is best for the kingdom of God. There is a higher call then living for myself. For the sake of the kingdom and the Gospel, I will limit my freedom for the cause. When it comes to making decisions about things I have freedom to do or not, I need to ask first, "is this edifying to those around me?" If you are living for God and others, you want what you do to help others in their walk with Christ. We could also ask if it is edifying to ourselves. There are things we could do that are not sin, but they do hinder us from being the kind of men and women God wants us to be.

And whatever you do, do it with faith. This means you prayerfully seek God on the kind of things you should be involved in and do them or dont do them because you believe that is what God wants you to do or not do. For whatever is not from faith is sin. May your lifestyle bring the people around you closer to Christ.
