Every time I go home to Las Vegas, everyone asks me what I'm going to do "down town" and if I'm going to gamble. And every time I answer "no" I get the same disbelieving stares, as though the rest of the world believes that there's nothing to do in my home town other than waste your money on addicting games and unsavory attractions.

The truth is, i rarely if ever go anywhere near the city itself. I prefer to occupy myself with the beauty of the desert, the mountains, and my most recent favorite attraction; the Wetlands wildlife preserve that's mere blocks away from my parents' house.

Today we took a four mile hike through the park that took a little less than two hours. This is footage I shot while we wandered the trails avoiding mud from the recent rainfall that Nevada received.

Sorry for the shaky camera work at times. Most of those shots I was standing precariously on a fence or something to get out and above the obstacles blocking the view. :)

The music is Windswept; released under the creative commons license on http://incompetech.com

  • To funny I almost can see my home. I also love the park there, I grew up in this area and played all around out in the desert there long before there was anything going on out there. What they have done since those days is incredable. Thanks for sharing.

  • I've spent a lot of time in the wetlands, hiking, biking, running, fishing, exploring - there are some strange sights to see there - Farther down the river nearer lake las vegas is a small population of raccoons and beavers that live in this dense forest area! I have no idea how they made their way there, maybe from Mt. Charleston? The water is also filled with bass, and in some ponds are giant goldfish as big as carp!

  • Today 4/13/11 I saw a large long neck leather back turtle on the down side of the large bridge. The shell was 12 to 18 inches across and neck was about 12 inches. Hard to imagine the head withdrawing for protection. What kind of turtle was it? I can find no answers on google. I love Wetlands park! I’m from NYC and always stop at least twice when I visit LV.

  • Looks amazing. Like you explained, I had no idea (other than the mountain ranges) that such beauty existed out there.
