"I'm Going To See Old Virginie".
Harry Weldon (The Popular Favourite).
Recorded London, October, 1927.

Harry Weldon 1881 - 1930.

Catchphrase; ' 'S No Use, Sickening, S'No Use!!'.

A long forgotten Music Hall artiste but very popular in his day. born at Liverpool in 1881 and worked as a florists assistant before making his stage debut at the Tivoli, Barrow in 1900.

Harry Weldon joined the famous Fred Karno company of comedians in 1905 and won great popularity in the 'Football Match Sketch'. It is interesting to note that Weldon's sidekick in this sketch was none other than Charlie Chaplin, who decided to go and find out what all that moving picture business was all about over in America!.

Leaving Karno, the character of Stiffy became the basis of his act. Weldon became Top of the Bill in Music Halls across the land, playing also to continental audiences too at the Olympia Music Hall in Paris during 1908.
His characterisations included:
'Joe the Crossing Sweeper', 'The White Hope' and 'The Matador'. He developed ill heath from 1923, dying at the early age of 49 in 1930.

Harry Weldon recorded between 1912 and 1927 appearing on HMV between 1916 and 1920. His last four sides were for Vocalion and very good they are too!.

Let's not forget Harry!. I wonder if this is a first 'You Tube' appearance?.

  • How interesting to hear a Harry Weldon recording at long last. At one time he was one of Fred Karno's army along with Charlie Chaplin. When I was a child I met his daughter, Maisie Weldon and her husband Carl Carlisle when they were entertaining in South Africa, so I have always been interested in Maisie's illustrious father. Thanks so much for another fascinating upload.

  • Thats fascinating Jean. Typical of me to love such an obscure (Today) performer!. Nobody today will remember him and there is probably no one alive today who saw him. I treasure his recordings anyway!.Thanks for that memory.

  • There is a clip of Maisie Weldon on the British Pathe site and she does an impression of her father.

  • I LOVE your electric phonograph! Thanks a lot! The sound is great and the look is great!

  • Thanks.I am very proud of my old Radiogram!.

  • Great to hear Harry Weldon on You Tube at last. Sadly, Harry like so many other of the early Music Hall artiste's is all but forgotten to-day.

  • Thanks.Nice to know someone else out there knows him!. I have a few of his records including the four 'Broadcast' sides - love em. Always have!.

  • I will never forget him for I too am a Harry Weldon!

  • Windyridge Cds have an entire Cd available of Harry Weldon. Wonderful stuff.

  • I have seen this clip, which must have been done when she was very young. Maisie and her husband, Carl Carlisle settled in Australia in the fifties. I would be interested to know what happened to them.

  • How nice to think you have broadcast Harry to the world,a long forgotten artist brought back in a small way on here by you!

  • Thank you for presenting this forgotten artiste!
