Correct Lycoming / Continental procedure is to do what the pilot did - keep cranking the engine and blow it out once she starts.

pretty normal.....actually.

Production 185s had carburetors on the first Continental O-520 engines, later the IO-520 engine came with fuel injection, so this airplane probably does have a carburetor. You're right though - the flames didn't get anywhere near the air intake.

stuffed up a c172 engine start the other day - flooded it... After seeing this gotta be more careful...

The flames got sucked back into the carburetor

pretty sure that it didnt go back into the carb, 1st off the intake is infront of the flame, and second, a 185 has no carb, its fuel injected.
