An original song written to commemorate those who died in the First World War. On this performance, I am joined by Des Friel and Chris Waldron. With thanks to Alun Rhys Jones whose version of my song inspired me to make my own video to accompany it. There used to be a group called 'Tommy's Lot' and I originally intended this as a theme song for their act. When the band broke up it seemed a shame to waste it. It went on to feature in a prize-winning performance in the international group competition at the Edinburgh Folk Festival It is now widely performed and has been recorded by a couple of people on the folk scene - most notably Dick Miles who included it on his album 'Cheating The Tide'

  • Thanks. I wrote this over a six week period thirty years ago, completing it on St. George's Day. Nice to think it is still doing the rounds.

  • Dominic, This is superb. Today of all days, I spotted it.... and many many thanks for the mention of my own version. I sang it this last week at our local Folk-Club and of course, ~I got all choked up again.... Just one thing... your version ought to have an accordion... Hah :) Thanks again

  • so glad I found this again. You were my english lecturer at University in 1980/1 and you sang this during a small group seminar. It was a wonderful and moving song then and still is. Myself and some other students went on to sing it in the band we had formed. I wonder if you remember the night we turned up at a pub on a folk night planning to sing it only to discover you were the main "turn"!! We confessed and you were gracious enough to let us sing it anyway!

  • Thanks for having us listen to it, I think it's great and you have a real talent for music!
