This short film is my final piece for Guy Sherwin on my Middlesex University film course.
It was created with the help of Peter Reynolds and explores the idea of the perception of an object being influenced by its context. The film is also an exploration of narrative and ways in which a film can be made with out one.

  • instead of muting the song, how about changing the music

(im not studying film, just a thought :D )

  • could do. would if i had the time.

  • don't you think using a song with lyrics creates some sort of narrative? or at least sets up some emotional cues for the viewer? i think even the use of black and white rather than color sets up certain associations. what did your instructor say about the film? i liked the concept overall but was curious about the critique you got. are you going to do anymore short films or was that more than enough? i'm sure it was alot of work just to get all of this together. cheers!

  • Yes I don't think I'll be doing any more short films for a while, I have a background in practical filmmaking and am much more interested in theory these days.

Yes I agree that it being in b&w creates connotations as indeed does the music. But i believe narrative usually has at least some denotations in it too. Is it possible to create a film with no connotations at all? Doesn't the audience always bring their own narrative to everything they watch?

  • Having said that, yes my tutor and I both agreed it could have done without the music - infact I have shown this piece a few times on mute - however i think its very difficult to watch with no sound. Thanks for the feedback :)

  • p.s. feel free to watch on mute and let me know your comparison :)

  • hi chris it greg w

    this vid is strange

  • another time less classic.i think its bloody great

  • Short films are impractical? Well, if you're more into theory these days, short (or long) digital video pieces are sort of the perfect vehicle for some sort of praxis. Theories need to be tested don't they?

What I mean to say is don't give up the habit so quickly. Keep a video sketchbook or something. I think you might have a kino eye there. Have you watched much Vertov?
