If my system has a leak and all the refrigerant has escaped, and all my components seem to be in working order, would my next logical step be a pressure test with nitrogen or a vacuum test? It's an older split system, with no cooling, compressor works air handler is good, thermostat works, the fan runs. Thanks again for the info, I've been told there is nothing to do but replace it, I am just trying to diagnose the why.

@jetpilotdds Yes, you'd need to pressurize the system with nitrogen to leak check it.

Thanks for the video Dr Z, after you connect the high and low sides, to get readings, do you normally need to open or back off the servicing valve or is it unnecessary to do anything else to get a reading off the system
jetpilotdds 6 months ago
@jetpilotdds It isn't necessary to do anything with the service ports to get a reading on the gauges.

hi dr z i want to ask you something do you need to have your EPA to buy gauges???

@adrian120708 You should be able to buy gauges if you let the sales people that you're a student of the trade. You really only need an EPA card if you're buying refrigerant or a product that contains refrigerant.
