The Poodle is a breed of dog, and is regarded as one of the most intelligent breeds of dog. The poodle breed is found in small, medium, and large sizes, and in many coat colors. Originally bred as a type of water dog, the poodle is skillful in many dog sports, including agility, obedience, tracking, and even herding. Poodles are elegant in the conformation ring, having taken top honors in many shows, including Best in Show (BIS) at the Westminster Kennel Club show in 2002 and BIS at the World Dog Show in 2007.Poodles are retrievers or gun dogs, and can still be seen in that role. The breed's English name has German origins. (The name poodle comes from the German word short for pudelhund or, reflecting the breed's development from a water dog; the word pudel is related to the English word puddle.) However, most sources concur that the French are responsible for developing the modern breed into its current form, and developing the different sizes. The French name for the poodle is caniche, referring to ducks and the poodles' water dog origins. It is believed that the traditional cutting of hair as a bracelet in the legs was formerly used in hunting in the snow, where most of the hair was shorn down to facilitate the swimming of the dog, but the joints, lungs, heart and kidneys were maintained with high hair to protect them from cold. The pompoms at the end of the tail served as a "flag" to be observed by the owners as the Poodle plunged to the bottom of the water. They are intelligent, kidders, good swimmers and hunters, have temperament docile with its owner and to the people who are familiar with, and seek the company of people who are most fond. Why are so intelligent can be bored easily, and are quite creative in finding mischief. Dogs are very people oriented and thus zealous for them. Of guard dogs are excellent, and unlike some working breeds, are not normally attached to a single person in the family. The Poodles of giant and medium size tend to be docile with children. Not require much exercise as other dogs for hunting, but they are agile, and still enjoy large amounts of exercise. Dogs are showing great affection for owners. It is considered the second most intelligent race in the world.
