There are 143 million orphans in the world by conservative standards and every 18 seconds a new child is orphaned somewhere in the world. There are at least 500,000 children living in US foster care today. Every 14 seconds another child is orphaned because of HIV/AIDS. And every 2.5 seconds a child dies in the world because of vaccine preventable disease or malnutrition.
In our isolated, insulated world these statistics sting until our mind wanders somewhere else or to something else. We tend to believe that those children are in a place we will never see and it is so easy to forget.
Lifeline Children's Services has always had an overwhelming desire to take care of orphans since our founding in 1981. Lifeline has been involved with international adoption since 2000. Having led many families through the process of adoption, Lifeline's leadership became burdened with the circumstances of those children who have been left behind, unadopted, and ineligible for adoption due to circumstances beyond their control. In 2009, Lifeline began an initiative focused on older orphan solutions, (Un)adopted.
"Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world." James 1:27
