This video demonstrates the current progress on my tile based level editor being written in C# using Microsoft XNA Studio 3.1.

The editor currently supports a rear, mid, and fore layer, multiple collision types, a terrain effect layer, a hazard layer, portals, and entity spawning.

The editor then exports the map into an XML file.

The next iteration of this editor will support a dynamic amount of layers with full occlusion.

Also, my apologies as the audio goes slightly out of sync with the video. Blame camstudio.

Part 1 of this demo shows the editor being used with my current platformer engine
Part 2 of this demo shows a quick demo of the editor being used to draw a top down RPG map

  • That is pretty awesome... Just started on a 2d XNA tile based engine. It's easier than I thought it would be until I started adding immense detail to the engine and editor. This is very nice.

  • @TheBatchGuy If you just started working on one let me give you one piece of advise. Plan out a design that is as open ended as possible. Just plan plan plan before you start coding. All of my early roadblocks where a result of poor planning.

    Thanks for the compliments.

  • How did you include the transparency? C# doesn't allow you to do that normally.... please tell me.

  • @Manifest222 XNA supports alpha transparency by default. Nothing special needs to be done to support it. As long as you use PNG files with transparency everything will *for the most part* work as intended.

  • Did you create the gameengine yourself or did you download someone elses?
