June 2001 a group of friends traveled about 1 hour north of Sydney to Terrigal to do a few dives. Unfortunately the boat had some engine issues and stopped in an unexplored area. The dive looked pretty ordinary until I went over some rocks and found a large cuttlefish. I immediately retreated and got the attention of the other divers and my husband (the cameraman). As I was leading the dive and the cuttlefish saw me first it was initially aggressive, but then curiousity kicked in and he wouldn't leave me alone. I was not a very experienced diver at this stage ... if you turn the volume up you might hear me scream! The jolt at the end is where I finally got the attention of my husband to indicate I needed help! :o)))

  • The angle in the beginning made the Cuttle Fish look Gigantic!

  • He looked pretty darn bit to me!

  • sooooo cool when they change colors!! i want to dive with these things...where was this dive at??

  • 1 hour north of Sydney, Terrigal New South Wales, Australia!

  • cuttlerfishes are not that big, most are like the size of a cellphone or CD.

But this is seems bigger than usual.

  • Mmm ... yes, we have the little ones as well ... that is why this one here in Australia is called Giant Cuttlefish (Sepia apama)and can grow up to 50cm and 12kg! And by the way ... I am not a little girl either, so he was pretty big! :o)))

  • Aren't these animals amazing? Please help us protect our South Australian Upper Spencer Gulf breeding aggregation... new pressures are mounting from proposed industry! There's info on our channel under 'Cuttlefish Country' and a petition to sign on our website...

  • Look how alert it is, the way it turns its head to check its surroundings. Amazing intelligence for an invertebrate

  • 95ellington i personally have caught bug cuttles in my fishing time and ill tell you now ive seen some really big ones including one i caught last year was 1.4m and weighed 47 pounds.the reason i think judging by the behaviour of the fish was either you were close to the spawning ground or it had already picked its grounds and was trying to warn you off so its mating chances were higher or it was a terratorial male but it looks like a female so idno but good job to frannyw26 for woosing out

  • The ones i met, were not so curious. They were most likely to run away :-) But they were not Australian cuttlefish.

  • cuuuuute :>>> I want one of this animals :>>
