GO Katherine

@ThePharaoho Well sure we know that now. I'm just saying for the times and country they were living in, and not being able to foresee the future, they were both being unreasonable. But to be honest I'm not big on monarchies in principle. So its hard for me to judge a good monarch from a bad in the confines of history given I find the whole system of government disdainful...but from what I've read she wasn't as tyrannical as her predecessors so that's a plus...
-
@bmollhag It's funny that you say that, because it happened anyway. His daughter with Anne became that greatest monarch England ever had and probably ever will have. "A woman as the greatest monarch"
-
@TheNuharoo Henry was the one who ruined the life of his daughter and there was no guarantee that Mary would have remained a princess, with or without her mother entering a convent--that could be altered at a whim by the king. It's easy for people to pass judgments hundreds of years later when they could see the full picture of what happened.
-
No she wouldn't of. If the marriage was annulled then Mary would have been declared a bastard. But more than that I don't think Katherine fully understood why Mary couldn't be queen. Sure she wanted to give henry a son, but she grew up with her mother being a great military leader...She wasn't as afraid of a Queen regent as henry was...

Mary could have remained princess if Katherine had retired to a convent, but Katherine was so beyond unreasonable that she ended up ruining the life of her daughter. If she had retired, Mary would have remained heir until a son was born and she would have made a good marriage a lot earlier in life and had a family. It was Katherine that made things more difficult by refusing. The marriage would have been dissolved gracefully and without an rancor or declared either way.
-
I think they both should have been more reasonable. Because of the times that they were living in, Katherine knew that the odds of her having a living son at this point was highly improbable-which was necessary for the stability of the realm. England had never had a successful queen regent in it's history and Henry wouldn't chance it. Yet Henry also should have known that Katherine would never concede to being his whore and Mary his bastard. If Mary could be princess then KoA would have taken it.
-
@egrant8283 If she had been beheaded, it would have resulted in full blown war, that Henry would have lost. Henry treated his higher ranking brides better than he did the commoners.
-
I gotta say it's not D'aragon- there's no D-apostraphe in spanish.
-
very valid point nuharoo she could have persuaded charles of spain to take military action against henry but she didnt. In fact at this point i would go so far as to say Catherine was far more powerful than Henry which is probably why she didnt get be-headed

FYI, Showtime has announced a new show called "The Borgias" coming late 2010 with Jeremy Irons as the infamous Pope Alexander VI aka Rodrigo Borgia.

Jeanne de Valois' marriage to Louis XII of France was annulled because the French King wanted to marry the widow of his predecessor, Anne of Brittany. Jeanne could have won the case if not for Pope Alexander VI (aka Roderic Borgia) who granted the divorce for political reasons. After Anne's death, Louis XIII went on with his 3rd marriage to Mary Tudor, the sister of Henry VIII before his death in 1515.

Katherine looked at all the wrong people as the enemy; Wolsey was right, her defiance did cost the Catholic Church England and she made a huge mistake on not entering, nominally only, a convent.

@TheNuharoo I think she would have if there no mistresses and bastards that Henry crassly paraded abt. After all the yrs of enduring all that crap, then, to have him insisting that their marriage was unlawful, that was definitely the last straw for her. And besides, there's no secured guarantee from Henry that he would remain devot to the Catholic faith after that. And what about Mary? As a mother, there was no way that she gonna let her daughter be the inferior offspring.

@TheNuharoo Henry was a pig who takes & takes & takes and i support Katherine for standing up to him even though the timing was kinda too late. Let's remember that she could have persuaded her nephew, charles of spain, to take military action but she didn't because she didn't want harm to come to the commoners
