It seemed very fast to quit however. Looks like the takeup reel didn't engage or slipped.I have a few 4 track stereo reel to reels but no computer tape machines. Cool video.

and so we moved to HDDs and SSDs

Ahh, vacuum loading was failed... However I wonder why I could understand what happened. cuz I've seen it at the museum when I was 5 yo.

OOPS!

(Also, it would have been super neato to video this with a slow motion camera...)

You know, the spectacular failure modes of some of this hardware is part of the reason I love this stuff.

Having been a mainframe engineer for many years I'd check the vacuum switches in the top column first. Looks to me like its not registering the tape is in there, hence keeps feeding tape.
Well, hopefully you got it fixed by now or it's been a long down time ! ;-)

Paul Allen has more money, better facilities, and Rich Alderson. So no. I did sell my 2065 to Paul, however.

LOLs are perfectly appropriate. Looks like the supply reel is throwing off tape far too fast at load time. Needs 'adjustment'; the tape tension is supposed to be maintained at the right level by a combination of 'forward' and 'reverse' forces from the two tape reels.
