Disputed South China Sea on ASEAN Agenda

On Tuesday, Defense ministers from ASEAN nations meet Russian and U.S. defense chiefs in Hanoi. Topping their agenda... expanding co-operation in the region and territory disputes in parts of South China Sea.

Defense ministers from the Association of South-east Asian Nations, or ASEAN, discussed the South China Sea dispute during a one-day summit with defense chiefs from Russia and the US.

Tuesday's meeting in Hanoi focused on improving understanding and transparency between ASEAN countries on defense issues.

Relations between China and Japan are at their lowest after a collision between a Chinese trawler and two Japanese patrol boats off disputed islands in East China Sea.

[Jun Azumi, Japanese Defense Minister]:
"It is not only me but, afterwards between eight other countries and ASEAN. There was no direct reference to China but in terms of maritime safety and the South China Sea -- there were similar discussions (on ensuring stability and peace) so I think we are of the same opinion."

Vietnam's defense minister says that disputes between ASEAN members would adversely affect the bloc's economies.

[Phung Quang Thanh, Vietnamese Defense Minister]:
"The two ways of trading between ASEAN countries is worth 1.7 trillion US dollars per year. If we have maritime security problems, it would directly affect the economy of both ASEAN and non-ASEAN countries."

Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam all claim parts of the potentially oil and gas-rich South China Sea. China claims most of the maritime area, which over half of the world's oil tanker traffic sails.

China invaded Vietnam and got kicked out many times for the past 1000 yrs. 1959, China invaded Tibet. 1974 China attacked South Vietnam & took Paracel Islands. 1975-1978 China sponsored and provided aids to the Khemer Rouge that killed 2 million Cambodians. 1979, China crossed border into Vietnam, wasted 100k troops. In 1988, China killed 64 Viet sailors on Spratly Islands & took 1 island. In 1995, China took Mischief Reef from Philippines.

I think I may explain why so many South east Asia countries are wary about China .History! Though China did not conquer any of the South east asia countries and has a relatively good relationship with them. But because of the tremendous influx of business like overseas Chinese who settled down in many of the south east asia countries. Although they form a small proportion in their adopted home, they control much of the countries wealth. ThIs make a lot of native people angry.

@Hongtairang I agree with your suggestion. Vietnamese people, sometimes, I don't understand. Without China supported Vietnam and Laos, these countries have become under Americans' control. I share your feeling. I supppot our Chinese brothers. Stay strong as ever.

@eissal2007 : I agree with you.I can wait to see China will get the land back from Rusia from Far west syberia to entire North east of Pacific Ocean. They used to belong to China and China should get it back with force or with peace. I am supporting our china neighboring country.

@Hongtairang I totally agreed with you my friend. The white race is looking down on other races all the time. China have leared from history. They will never be BULLIED again. In fact China is the ONLY Asian country can stand up to the US and European. They must kick the US out of the Pacific Region. I hope????

Firstly, China give back VIetnam paracel islands. China invaded Paracel islands of Vietnam from 1974

Secondly, China respect UNCLOS 1982
