    1829 1st canal opened,port dalhousie to port robinson,welland river or feeder canal. 1833 2nd canal bigger locks port dalhousie,to port colborne.1887 3rd canal pot dalhousie across st cath.escarpment then to port colborne.1931 -1973 4th canal port weller to port colbrune with the by pass and up grades.

  • hey ddashwood good video to bad there's not more around.I used to have an engineering book published in 1940 that had photos of them building the cannal and the great western railway tunnel (the bule ghost, if you want to) but someone stold it in a baeakin.

  • Actually, while they mention the building of the 3rd canal in this clip, this is actually the 4th (present) canal during the 1rst phase of construction, ca. 1912 (The canal const. would be halted from 1915-19 because of WW1).....the 3rd canal was built from 1873 until 1887 when the then new Aqueduct at Welland (My home town) was completed; about 10 years before moving picture (movie) film was invented.

    (Only grainy "still shots" of the third canal construction exist)
