Actualy I've always found this song quite cynical and deliberatly hollow.
Note Bowie repeats the verse and chorus immediatly after first singing them and then repeats the very first line a second time.
This suggests that he is perhaps addressing three differant people (perhaps three potential "lays" in a bar) rather than someone he loves.
Also, if you interpretate it as a love song it's somewhat self-pittying, hardly a declaration of adoration a-la "Maybe I'm Amazed" by Paul McCartney.

This is a beautiful rendition of the song. I wish Bowie performed it like this live - "Be My Wife"'s lyrics suggest a mood much more melancholy and low key than that on the album version, which this cover portrays very well.
