I remember I came back and visited in 2006 and things seemed pretty much the same as it had been the past 6 or 7 years. Then I didn't come back until late 2008 and was absolutely astounded at how quickly things had gone down hill since 2006. I couldn't believe how bad it had gotten. It looked desolate and trashy. almost half ghost town, half ghetto. Something must have happened in those two years that really let Garden City go.

starting into the 1980s-1990s, there was a large influx of black people and with that came a lot of white people who got freaked out and moved out of Garden City to Pooler and other places. Businesses started moving out as well. Right before Bush became president, the port went and bought up much of the residential areas. in my memory, this was when things started to go into a downward spiral. There started to be lots of break ins and shootings. lots of teen violence. then came war, recession..

the sad thing is...that Garden City used to be a great place. It was a place where you could leave your door unlocked and a neighbor would just walk in and say hi. you used to be able to fall asleep at night and all you would hear were the clicking of cicadas, the midnight train,and perhaps loud cheers coming from a homecoming game at Groves High School. You used to be able to walk all the way down to the piggy wiggly without fear and grab an ice cream and the dairy queen.

If you want drugs, prostitutes, crime infestation then come here. Do not be misled! Ask these people if they live here. Nobody here would give you the time of day, stop to lend you a hand, say howdy doody in passing by or NADA. This is an urban area with high crime, high unemployment, lots of projects, lots of crooks and scammers and just down right filthy. Its close to beautiful Savannah but its a dump. GET THE FACTS!!! You folks comment so people can be informed of the real Garden City Ga.
