Mary Robinson, the former United Nations high commissioner of human rights and president of Ireland, spoke on "Human Rights and Globalization" in the EMU Ballroom. As UN high commissioner, Robinson gave priority to integrating human rights concerns in all the activities of the United Nations. As president of Ireland, she was the first head of state to visit Rwanda in the aftermath of the 1994 genocide there. She also was the first head of state to visit Somalia following the crisis there in 1992, receiving the CARE Humanitarian Award in recognition of her efforts in that country.
"Human Rights" at the UN seems to have been taken over by the promoters of the war machine. The NGO, UN Watch, comes to mind. Stephen Harper's Human Rights Museum in Winnipeg is another site of the cooptation of this vital concept to serve interests that run counter to human rights.
