  • Is this Vernon County, Wisconsin? We had a "new style" Ellis single row planter like yours but my grandparents had an "old style" planter. We only had five acres of tobacco. When it came to tobacco I was about as excited as Billy is in this video. Us kids would hate it & my dad would say how lucky we were because when he was a kid Grandma & Grandpa had 10 acres of tobacco, not just five. We never had a video camera back in the day, but there are tobacco photos galore. Thanks for uploading.

  • This brings back a flood of memories for me. Grew up in W. Kentucky growing dark-fired with my dad and grandad. My first job at 7 years old was following the 2-row setter with my hands stuffed with plants and a wooden tobacco "peg" transplanting missed, buried or upside down plants. Wasn't long after that I was given a hoe and taught that tobacco is the most labor intensive crop in the world. Haven't been in a field since 1980 but I still think of those hot, tired ,dirty days.
