The history of most cities and neigborhoods can often be told in its street name signs, with a little investigation. Here you will see the history of the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Carrick in street name signs.

  • Check out our Facebook page Carrick Overbrook Historical Society for that photo.

  • When Carrick became the 29th Ward in 1927 street names had to be changed because they couldn't be the same as others in the city. First come, first keepers. Good question, but I can't find any meaning for Lacona although there are towns in Iowa and New York which have that name. Check out our website and here for a photo of a picnic on Louise in 1913

  • Do you have any idea how Lacona Street in Carrick got it's name? I think it was originally named Louisa St. Could Lacona be another Indian name like Wynoka & Minooka.

I've been trying to find out how Lacona got it's name since I mover here in 1984.

  • Thank you so much for the street sign meanings and a brief histiry of carrick. It was wonderful and informative
