No hospital should operate outside the Safety Zone...everything beyond safety is a legitimate target," Sri Lanka's Defense Secretary, Gotabaya Rajapakse tells Skynews, admitting to the culpability of Sri Lanka Army shelling Puthukkudiyiruppu hospital In another interview with BBC, a clearly irate Rajapakse ridicules Lasantha Wickremanayake as an editor of a "tabloid," and queries reporter Chris Morris as to why the media is interested in "one man" when there are thousands of killings and murders
Dr Thurairajah Varatharajah said the shells in the later attack appeared to have been fired by the Sri Lankan army and killed five. He said they caused extensive damage to Puthukkudiyiruppu hospital, one of the last functioning health institutions inside rebel-held territory. The Red Cross said the earlier artillery attack killed two people. Dr Varatharajah said one person was killed. The military spokesman, Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, did not answer calls seeking comment
The best hope is the United Nations. The Commonwealth has an Indian secretary general, Kamalesh Sharma, and the regional grouping of south-east Asian states, Asian, will rally round Sri Lanka. It would be difficult for Sinhala President Rajapaksa to reject a mission by UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon.
