This has been running for 1 year. It was set up at the end of November 2009. I have learned more in one year with this tank than what I read all Summer of 2009. It has been fun and I am ready for my 60 to be set up. I am thinking about changing out the crushed coral for a deep sand bed in this system maybe once my 60 is ready I'll move my rock, corals, and fish in to it so I can make that change. I really like the deep sand bed look over the crushed coral look.

  • My 29 Isn't doin very well we had an accident, My advise is go to a hardware store buy some longer tubing so the pump sits on the bottom. The tubing you have most likley will leave the pump off the bottom a bit. if it's like mine it will vibrate loose and fall and spray saltwater up into the light fixture frying it out. Now I need 200 bucks for a new one! :(

  • Welcome to the world of saltwater! I hope you have as much fun as I do, To answer your protien skimmer question, I actually don't have one, I have been told, ( again don't really know if this was good or bad advice) that the protien skimmer made for it isn't all that great. It will pull out some but not the dark smelly skim you want. So I have left in the Bioballs, and ran it like that.

Which Biocube did you get the HQI one or the older compact flourescent light one?

  • why are you sad because you don't have a clown fish??

  • Thanks for the tips didn't know that nudibraches will eat that. I was told that they are not reef safe so I have never bought one. I'll look into that.

  • How often do you change the make shift protein skimmer?

  • Thank you... I just got a bio cube yesterday and set up excited to learn.

  • @Tnemec72 your boring be happy that you have clown fish idoit

  • to raise my alkalinity and calcium to the right level i used B-Ionic which have helped my corals grow a bunch and stay healthy, If you are already using that then good job =] maybe they just don't pulse. If you want you can check out some of my nano reef vids also.

  • Hey, nice tank =] If you really want to get rid of those aiptasias quick, wwwDOTsaltyundergroundDOTcom sells berghia nudibranches which ONLY eat aiptasia (glass anemones). You could also get some good value coral frags and maybe another clown to make the shipping worth while.

I got my 2 clowns from them and a few coral frags which are doing really well.

Just an observation about your xenia, I noticed they don't seem to be pulsing. This happened with mine when my alkalinity was too low.

  • Nice nano you got there =) and thanks for the shout out. I know exactly where you are coming from by getting wrong information and right information from different sources. When it comes to me, I tend to lean towards the more modern type of marine aquarium and the more natural way as well. Keep up the good work.
