Governor Howard Dean, M.D. launches grassroots healthcare reform campaign at http://www.StandwithDrDean.com and draws line in the sand over healthcare reform which must have a universally available public option, like Medicare, available for all Americans.

As a first step in the campaign, Dr. Dean asked supporters to add their name to a petition statement at www.StandwithDrDean.com. The text of the petition reads:

Give America a choice. We support healthcare reform that allows individual Americans to choose either a universally available public healthcare option like Medicare or for-profit private insurance. A public option is the only way to guarantee healthcare for all Americans and its inclusion is non-negotiable. Any legislation without the choice of a public option is only insurance reform and not the healthcare reform America needs.

Dr. Dean's announcement comes at time when insurance companies and HMO's have vowed to fight President Obama on his campaign promise to include a publicly available option in the healthcare reform he wants passed by Congress this year.

The campaign, which will be run by Governor Dean and Democracy For America, will generate broad based support for a public option through neighborhood canvasses, meetings with legislators, running ads in targeted districts, and more. Dr. Dean asked supporters to gather signatures and the organization expects to deliver over 250,000 signatures to members of Congress in the weeks to come.

  • If i may offer an international perspective , i find it incredible up to 50% of what the US pays for healthcare, is for private profit and has nothing to do with healthcare at all. Imagine the increase in economic productivity if people and businesses weren't made bankrupt by someone getting sick or injured, let alone how much more produtive a healthy, less stressed population would be. Imagine quality healthcare for every one for much less than you are paying now.

  • Way to Go Doc!!

    Get the message out there!

    Enough with the Insurance Companies!

  • Howard Dean is listening the the American people. We need to communicate our message to Congress. I live in Los Angeles; who is planning the protests around here?

  • "Next to President Obama I trust this man."

Wow have things changed. I don't even recognize Obama now, in comparison to the Obama from the 2008 campaign. Of course, that was all a show, since he really never wanted the public option to begin with. Like much of the Senate and House of Reps, the White House has been bought by the health insurance lobby.

  • Next to President Obama I trust this man.

    Dr. Dean talks we listen.

We are so fortunate to have these two brightest men as Democrats.

America has a right to be proud.

  • tell the truth Dean, this plan is to make all young hard workers buy health insurance and if they don't it will be taken out of thier paychecks or bank account, the democrats admit to this, so if you don't want to be forced to pay for insurance you better call your representative now,

  • Bout' as convicing as a block of wood.

  • If everyone of the 400,000 people signed MY petition we could put the conservative movement out of power.

Single payer advocates, if you want to pulverize the power of conservatives and get single payer enacted please read my blog at blog daht democratz daht org

  • If these Blue Rats block the public option and Obama signs a bill w/o public option, then the Dems have lost my vote (no, I'm not going GOP, either). The only person I'd consider voting for again is Dean if he ran for prez again. No health reform, no vote for you, Obama!

  • I am with you. Sir! Thank you for (once more) standing up for what is morally right.

  • Get on it guys, call your senator and representative, and sign the petition

  • Baloney, that's just a stupid thing to say, and all evidence is to the contrary.
