"Mr. Cogburn, in your four years as U.S. Marshall, how many men have you shot?"
"Shot or killed?"
"Let us restrict it to 'kill' so that we may have a manageable figure."

5 out of 5 stars

Mattie Ross' father has just been murdered, and though she's only fourteen, Mattie (Steinfeld) travels far to find U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn (Bridges) so that he might track down the murderer Tom Cheney (Brolin). With the help of a Texas Ranger (Damon), the three set out on a wild west adventure full of gun fights, whiskey drinking, roping and wrangling, and witty banter.

The Coen brothers are nothing short of amazing. With previous hits like Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and No Country For Old Men, the bar is set high for this adaptation of the classic John Wayne film. However, they knock it out of the park!

The four main actors (Steinfeld, Bridges, Damon, and Brolin) are each spot on! Not surprising the three men are controlled, powerful, captivating, and compelling. But, surprisingly is the unknown 14-year-old Steinfeld who, despite this being her first major film, is able to keep up with these three older, more experienced, veteran actors. The dialogue is rich and complex, which would be difficult for anyone to deliver well, but somehow the then 13-year-old is able to say it in a way that is believable and spontaneously coming from her viscera.

The film is rough, gritty, and absolutely beautiful. The New Mexico and Texas terrain offers a breathtaking and dangerous landscape for this story of murder, vengeance, and adventure. The story builds beautifully to its climax atop a horse, guns blazing.
