The Blue Note speaks with members of the Ray Brown Tribute Band (Dee Dee Bridgewater, Benny Green, Christian McBride & Gregory Hutchinson) about their former mentor and boss, the legendary bassist, Ray Brown.

Ray Brown (1926-2002) is recognized as one of the greatest bassists of all time; his deeply swinging sound has shaped many classic recordings by artists such as Oscar Peterson, Hank Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Quincy Jones, Frank Sinatra, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Blossom Dearie, Milt Jackson, and his own classic trio, which featured, among others, Benny Green and Gregory Hutchinson.

Besides being one of the all-time greats, Brown was pivotal in helping the Blue Note Jazz Club achieve it's current reputation and standard of excellence.

  • @MrJMREISSER why not?

  • This is not a tribute that he would love. Not at all !!!!!!!!!!

  • This video is a candid view of family and mentoring. In particular, this is a view of this phenomenon as it occurs in Jazz. Jazz in particular is truly a taught and caught musical place. School will instruct on where people did this applied this, did that, etc, but Jazz's heart is passed from musician to audience to musician, and the improv tightrope they walk is a thing of grace. Thank you all, Dee Dee, Benny, Christian, and Hutch for sharing this side of your art and life.

  • Swag

  • Wonderful!

Special jazzy greetings to Benny, Christian, and Gregory whom we saw back in October 2005, at another Ray Brown Tribute at Yoshi's in Oakland, which included Russell Malone on guitar and John Clayton on bass. ~ Kandie and Ashley Webster
